For my music magazine masthead I am planning to use “shock” I
have not decided on a font but I will use a different font for the “S” which
will give my magazine an original left third. I don’t want my masthead to cover
the whole top of the page like mix mag so I only want it to reach half way. I plan
for my cover line to use a bright colour to go against my dark background. I would
also like my artist to slightly cover the masthead.

Target Audience - Questionnaire Analysis
Having creating a questionnaire I was able to collect a
number of views and tips from my target audience to help me when creating my
music magazine. By using the results I can make accurate decisions to suit my
target audience.
The feedback from my first questions was fairly even but “a
darker background” was preferred by a few votes, this was my original plan
however i would use a black background but my feedback suggested I choose a
dark grey instead. Also as the votes was so close I can make the decision to
choose a light background in which case the suggested colour was white and a
pale pink.
As for my second question on the colour of text was more
clear results as the majority suggested light/bright colours. The example colours
I was given was: red, white, blue and green. However based on a previous
drafting task and research I would add yellow to this list.
My third question was based on props which I was planning on using
however the feedback I received seems to suggest I should not use props which is very similar
to mix mag as they don’t tend to use props in the photographs.
My next question asked about the double page spread lay out
and I again had mixed responses but the votes suggested having an image over
the two pages with text around it was the better choice which I again means I am
going to change my mind as it is what the target audience wants.
In response to my final question (which was based on effects)
I received split responses which means I have to take effects into consideration.
This means I will use more effects than “minimal” but I won’t be going over the
top. The effects I am going to use are not yet decided but I want them to link
closely to my cover line and artist for example if the cover line mentions “fire”
then I might add an effect that looks like the photo is burning.
This questionnaire has helped me in making informed decisions
for my music magazine. I have learnt a lot about my Target audience so I can
use their tips which I will refer too. I did have ideas on what to put into my
draft which would have been a bad choice but now I know which direction to take
my project in. the questionnaire has also proved that some of my initial ideas
have been good for example the colour scheme.

Target Audience - Questionnaires
Today I have created a questionnaire designed for my target audience
which help collect ideas on how to improve my magazine in order to suit them. I have chosen these questions as I think they cover
the important areas of my magazine that I need get right so with more opinions I
should get reliable answers. the answers will help me when planning my magazine and when it comes to creating a magazine i will refer to my answers.

Drafting and Planning - Track Listings
For my music magazine I will be using a solo artist for my
main cover line/ story. So in my double page spread I will be using this artistes
and his fictional album for a review that will cover my main cover line. I think that it is important that I use a track
list for my target audience (which is electro dance music) to see as I think
that will interest them. I don’t expect to use a long list because I want the
review to focus on the main songs so I plan to use 4-5 but there is a possibility
that I might use around 10 in a list form to show the reader full coverage of
the album. My song choices so far are: Motivation, right now, electrons, the
mad time, let go, survival, off the rails, advanced, higher, fell the game. However
this is just a quick draft of songs so I expect them to slightly change.

Organisation - Photo-shoot effects
for the photos that i am going use in music magazine article i expect that the photo effects will be very useful as i think i can get it to link to my music genre theme "electro" really well. i have noticed in previous magazines linked to my genre such as mix mag photo effects are used sometimes in small amounts and in others quite a lot however for my magazine i don't want to fill my photo with effects so there will be a limit, to type of effects i plan to use is stuff like blurs and fades.
Tuesday, 15 December 2015
drafting and planning - influences
for my music magazine i will be looking closely at the mix mag magazine which has an influence on me as it is from the same genre of music as my magazine. although i don't particular the layout and colour scheme (with a few exceptions) i can learn a lot about how to present my artist and what sort of text to because it will be ideal for my target audience. i can take the ideas about presentation and use them to help construct my own music magazine.

organisation- style of artist and costume
When it comes to my photo shoot need to have a clear
understanding of my artist as I need to prepare for what type and style of artist
I need because if I get an artist that does
not match my target audience then no one
will buy my magazine so it is very important that I get it right. In a previous
peer assessment had a similar issue
with the content not matching the artist and genre so it’s clear I need to make
a change.
As
I am planning to do an electro/dance/house theme I have been viewing the “mixmag” magzine and I
have notcied that quite a few artits in the picture above using sunglasses which gives them an identy
that I rarely see in other genres. I have also noticed that some artist have
very complex costumes such as daft punk which will be very challing for me to
replicate however most artits like the ones in the picture above such as
david guetta and grove armada tend just
wear plain t shirts with some with text on like “we like elcetric”
So
when it comes to my photoshoot I plan to have solo artist with a similar
appearnce like the artists above (sunglasses and t shirt) where as if I was wearing a big trench coat I
will through my target audice off.
drafting and planning- remake remodel task peer assessment
http://callumcarter17.blogspot.co.uk/ task link
on a previous task i was given the "mix mag" masthead and i had to set out and create my own magazine using original photography. today i was give feedback on how i can improve my work as well as positive feedback.
one thing i did well was my colour scheme as it when well with my my background and showed potential.
however i was given a list of improvements the first one been "orphaning" when it comes to my title which is where words are left on there own.
secondly there was a big gap between the artist and the masthead so it would be good to have either the artist overlapping the masthead or the other way round. finally my content was a bit vague and not closely related to my genre.
this feedback has helped me understand where i am going wrong and how i can make changes/adjustments to improve my magazine. i will refer back to my feedback when creating drafts and my final version. i have also learned that my colour scheme is going in the right direction so i wont have to make adjustments there.

drafting and planning - front cover conventions
for my front cover of my music magazine it is important to use a number of conventions that will make my magazine both professional and unique. some conventions are essential to have and are found on all magazines. this contains a website URL, date, price and a bar code. i believe that this particular aspect will make my magazine professional. other conventions that i plan to use which are optional is a skyline along the top to form a sort of border which can also act as a sort of cover line. i also may use a PUG or a PUFF to attract more people to my magazine for example a person ma not like reading about their favourite band but they may want a chance to win tickets to see them.

here i have chosen another magazine article from mix mag which is similar to my style of magazine. i can use this magazine to help me with my music magazine as it will show many similarities as with my genre.
the layout is particularly is important because it contains to usual conventions such as bar code but it dose contain conventions such as a skyline at the top which i plan on using my self. there is cover lines on the sides with a main cover line in the middle. finally there is a main image which slightly covers the masthead at the top of the page.
the colour scheme is basic with red, white and black mix mag is one of the few magazines to adapt there colour scheme very new magazine as seen in previous research,
the photography is simple yet effective as it contains a mid shot of the artist with has obvious effects such as the drawing on top of the image.

drafting and planning - target audience
for my music magazine i hoping to base my genre of electo music so i will have to aim for a particular audience. as most music genres have a broad range of i wont bel looking for a particular age demographic but i am aware that small children and the elderly wont be choosing to view this product so i wont be considering them when i make my decisions. also i know the people viewing my magaine will show an intrst in my genre of music so i have to base my decisions on my genre because i dont want to create confusion for example using a choir as a band.

remake re model task.
this is a remake/remodel task where i had to choose an existing music magazine and make it my own by using original photography and my own convention's such as cover lines but i had to keep the masthead. i also had to stick to a similar layout but as mix mag changes its colour scheme a lot i had more freedom to choose my own. i decided to choose mix mag as they produces the same content of my area of music (genre) so it only seemed as this was a right choice.
my main image is of me as well as the main cover line, as for my sub cover lines i used avicii and .Swedish house mafia who are similar style artist's, as is daft punk who i used in my skyline which is an additional convention. another additional convention used is pug (top right) which is used to sell of my magazine by showing people you are getting something for free. the final conventions i used are essential for a magazine . this includes bar code, price, URL/website and a date. the colours i choose for my text where very bright as it goes well with the the black background.
this task has helped me a lot as this is similar thing i am planning to do so it helps me draft out and i can look at this as my first draft completed so i can look for weakness to improve upon for when it comes to my final product.

drafting and planning.
today i have completed a plan for my double page spread which looks simple which is because not much conventions is needed i plan for my text (shown as "a") to wrap around my image as i like the look and i have noticed not many magazines that i have analysed have not done a similar thing.
im not sure about what image i am going to use because it depends on my cover line for example if its an interview it will be a mid shot, but what i do know is the image will cover the majority of the two pages.
i am going to stick to my colour scheme which is dark/black with brightly coloured text.
this is only one draft so my ideas are likely to change in the future.

drafting and planning
Today i have created a quick first draft for my music magazine contents page. i have kept this draft quite simple and basic for my first attempt but I will move on to more complex drafts. I have decided to keep my stoires/cover lines on the leftside with the main coveline and picture on the right side. My image will be small and the colour scheme will be dark background with bright neon text.
Organisation - Style of Atiste
For my cover star(s) and will be appearing in my contents
page and double page spread I plan to create either a solo artists such as Avicii
or a band Like Swedish house mafia. I don’t want my style like bands like daft
punk because it is hard to get a costume similar to them. I want to take
inspiration from artist like Avicii because there costume is simple and casual Wear
which particle and something I could wear without difficulty. I plan as staying
as a solo artist for my magazine but if do choose a band the costume (choice of
clothing would be similar)
Tuesday, 24 November 2015
Organisation - Photoshoot Plan
For my Photo shoot I plan on using either my self-pretending
to be a solo artist or a few of my friends to pose as a band. It is important
that I we wear similar clothing to my genre because if we are dressed in lots
of chains and caps it would give the wrong impression for my target audience. I
hope if I chose to a do band to have 2 or 3 members because it’s quite rare to
see big bands in electro house music however I think I might go as a solo
artist like Avicii and Calvin Harris. I am going to take the opportunity of the
drama studio in my school because a Photo shoot there would mean I could have
dark backgrounds so I can take the opportunity to keep a dark background or I can
easily replace it.

today i have collected a double page spread on a similar music magazine.
the first way in which this can help me is for layout ideas because this magazine double page spread is mainly an image on the left page and mainly text on the right page which could be something i will to on my magazine.
secondly the photography is helpful because there is a number of different ways in which you can do photography. in the image on this double page spread you have the artist filling one page while looking directly at the camera for direct address so this again is something i can do.
finally the colour scheme is particularity helpful as i do plan on a dark background (darker than this magazine) and i like the colours used in the image.

drafting and planning
today i have created a quick first draft for my music magazine. i have kept this draft quite simple as i don't want my magazine to be to busy. i have over come this by leaving my cover lines on the side and taking up a large space. i also wanted to include so convention to advertise my magazine and i thought a good way not to take up space is by adding a skyline as they can be quite narrow. i put "pug/puff" at the bottom because im not sure if i having both or just one but there defernitly will be one there.
with my main i hope to have the cover line on top and a part of the masthead under the image as i have seen in some of the other magazines i have analysed the main image will consist of a band or a solo artist for my genre of music,
a few thing i will also be adding is a bar code under the cover lines with the date, price and website just under the masthead. for the colour of my magazine i want a dark background like a black with a bright/neon blue for text,

the first area that this contents page can help with is layout. the layout to this page is quite unique compared to others that i have analysed because it seems to have the more popular story'son the left and the rest sectioned off on the right.
secondly the photography contains images not just of artists but fans as well also the people are looking directly at the camera for direct address which is something i plan to do.
finally the colour scheme is black but mainly white but i think i am planning a dark background with light colour text so i wont be really looking for colour.

After completing my layout exercise (link above) i had my peer view my my work for a peer assessment. My peer said all my work was completed and locked realistic but it lacked certain details here and there which would have made my work look real. in order to make my work more detailed my peer suggested to add more conventions such as pugs and puffs. this would have made my work realistic.
self assessment
for my layout exercise i was pleased but my last 2 posts was slightly rushed. on my original blog post i felt i justified my decisions quite well in the post itself however i felt i could of enhanced this by adding a more detailed lengthy post. i also only slightly touched on how the task would help me in the future, for example positioning the text around 5 different sized and positioned images helped me plan my layout in different cases. Also if was change my genre idea to one of these genres for example R&B i can look back to see what style fonts i could use.

in the top half with the text in the bottom half whereas commonly you find the page divided

for this magazine article "M" i was given the task to name the band who are apart of the R&B genre. i thought the band had a french feel so i researched similar artists and i saw a band called the eagles so i decided to call them the buzzards which i google translated for the french name. mt cover lines where based on similar artists like Chris brown, Ne-yo and usher. i choose this font because its big and broad and is sort of similar to the "the blues genre"
For the "music x" magazine i was given the artist Bjork who is an Icelandic cult singer. i chose a font which was similar to the masthead because i am not too familiar with the genre but i also wanted it to be unique. i researched some similar artists to put on my magazine and in the end i chose: radio head, pan sonic and beck.
for the magazine "pitch " i was given a picture of Marilyn Manson who in the picture looks like something from a horror movie so i wanted to choose a font that would keep to the theme. i chose the red color because the connotations closely follow the theme as well as the hard rock theme so likened them to def leppard AC DC and marrilion
for the magazine "M" i was given an image of drake who is an "R&B" artist i chose not to create a busy (full) page of writing as i thought this genre of music may want more focus on the music/artists. for the main cover line i used drakes latest album "what a time to be alive". for the other cover lines i used similar artists such as kanye west. the cover lines font was bold and similar to the masthead but the main cover line i chose a more rebellious font.
for the magazine article "sound" the main image contained king of Leon who took up the majority of the page with a small section for the main cover line in which i chose their latest album "mechanical bull" i also used a similar font to the "kings of Leon" which was already gave to me. for the sub cover lines i did want them to cover the bands faces so i moved them towards bottom with a similar to the masthead.

Main image- the main images takes up the centre of the

the sides for text. A main image is required for a magazine front page.
Main cover line- the main cover line links to the main image
and is clear to see because it’s larger and in a different font to other cover
lines. The main cover line is needed on all magazine front covers.
Sub cover lines- the sub cover lines are on the right, they
are not essential but it does give your magazine more content to attract more
customers.
Bar code- the bar code is needed to make the magazine
official.
Left third- the left third is clear to see because the font

Colour scheme- the colour scheme is blue and white which

The duo's songs are considered essential in the French house scene. The group was managed from 1996 to 2008 by Pedro Winter (Busy P), the head of Ed Banger Records.Early in the group's career, the band members were influenced by groups including The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones. The group is known for emphasising using visual and story components associated with their musical productions, and for using disguises while in public and/or performing; specifically ornate helmets and gloves to assume robot personas in most of their public appearances since 2001. Research into similar products: music genre
Electro house is a hard form of house music. Electro house
is characterized (cross over) by a prominent bassline and/or kick drum and a
tempo between 125 and 135 beats per minute. Its origins were influenced by
electro, electroclash, pop, synthpop, and tech house. bands/ aretists related to this genre are Swedish house mafia and aviici, These are the of bands/artists match my genre closely so I
can use these as guidance for the type of bands in my music magazine.

research into similar product: potential colour scheme
Recently I have looked at similar products other (music
magazines) and they have given me a good idea for my choices. For my music
magazine I plan on using a colour scheme of light blue (possibly neon), white
and black. These colours may change in the future but for now it’s my initial
plan. I may use separate colours like a yellow for titles and headings. This is
similar to a magazine I have recently analysed called “mix mag”. I chose this
because it is eye catching on a newsstand as blue attracts and demands
attention because to me it reminds me of lighting and electricity which fits my
genre “electro” the black and white is mainly for my text and background to
keep it simple but this is not a final decision. The main us for the white is
for the background so my conventions such as pugs, puffs and masthead can
really stand out and have the focus in them. The blue colour will hopefully be
used as the masthead and possibly coverlines.

research into similar products
today i have analysed another magazine this time from "billboarded" my analysis covers the conventions, layout, photography and colour. i will be analysing the front cover, contents page and double page spread.
the front cover has all the needed convention such as date and price. the masthead is slightly different because it goes down the page not across however this still means it covers the left third so its easily identified. there is a main cover line and sub cover lines to show there's more to the magazine. the colour scheme is bright and colour full which match's the "pop" theme. there is a main image which covers the majority of the page,
the contents page follows the general layout to a contents page with the contents on the left/bottom with images on the right. most of the images have artists looking at the camera (direct address). the colour scheme is again bright and cheerful.
the double page spread keeps to the bright colour scheme and a main image looking directly at the camera for effect. the image goes on both pages. besides from a main image the double page sprad is heavily worded.

research into similar products
today i have collected a magazine cover page, contents page and double page spread from the magazine "mix mag" which is from the electro house genre and the genre i am looking to do for my music magazine. this means that this article will be the most helpful when i make my decisions such as font.
the front cover has a masthead which made up of a unique font that makes it easily recognisable especially for the left third. the cover page has all the needed conventions which includes: date, price and bar code. the main image is slightly different to other magazines because usually the artists cover the majority of the page apart from this one also the artists are in costume but this how they (daft punk) are usually shown on a magazine. the article also contains a skyline, puffs and pugs which makes the magazine seem exclusive. the colour scheme follows the music genre quite closely as light blue looks like lighting which looks electronic.
the contents page is fairly similar to most contents page because the actual page numbers and information is kept on the left hand side with the photography on the right. the photography its self is relativity big with the one photo of an artist looking directly at the camera for direct address. the colour of the contents page particularly the background follows the sort of electro fell with the bright neon colours.
the double page spread is quite different as the one page is quite heavily worded in text whereas the other is made up mainly of images. the photos all have the same effect on them which makes them look like the genre (electro) the colour scheme is kept constant through out even on the cover page which keeps to the electro vibe. the colours also makes the images stand out and the text clear to read.

drafting and planning: investigating typography
Today i have analysed a set of images which contain a different style in font on the main cover line and i have ordered them 1-6 with 1 been the best and 6 been the worst. to determine my order i had to match the font to the ethos which in this case was "urban yet chic" my order in the end read E,B,F,A,D and C. i have analysed my decisions next to each image as seen above. overall i think pictures E,B and F would be applicable however pictures A,D and C would not be acceptable. this exercise has showed me how i should think when designing my fonts.

Research into similar products
Here i have completed research into the another magazine (similar product) and i have annotated the conventions and there effect.i have done this because when it comes to me making my magazine article i will need to keep to these conventions as much as i can. I don't need everything such as puffs but it would be good to put them in also some conventions such as a bar code are essential to have.
